Positioned at the crossroads of Madison Park, the Flatiron Historic District, Greenwich Village and Chelsea, each distinct neighborhood personifies downtown living while offering a bounty of long-established residential amenities — yet it is their shared historical foundation and respect for individuality that truly define Alma’s context. Built in 1907 by the architectural firm of Buchman and Fox, Alma began life as the home to many of New York’s finest textile companies. A burgeoning city charged with infinite possibilities, New York City was rapidly forging its identity as the seat of commerce and culture. People from across the globe converged on it to pursue and realize their dreams, to leave their indelible marks. Likewise, Alma’s past has been rich with texture, life, and meaning; her future will certainly learn from this history and build upon it. Beneath four decades of layered office décor lay hidden gems epitomizing the best structures of this genre: plaster-wrapped terra cotta columns, walls of floor to ceiling windows, and a façade of limestone details impossible to recreate today. We searched over a year for the right property, employing the defining criteria for all Beck Street Capital projects: strong historical context, great architectural bones, distinctive features, and a unique location. Alma was the perfect fit. Complementing Alma’s “bones” is the presence of an adjacent vacant lot and a wealth of unused development rights. This being New York, attention immediately focused on the opportunity to use every inch of these air rights to fully exploit the parcel, filling the lot and building an enormous extension atop the existing limestone building. Our view, as with much, is different. We believe an abundance of air and light serves to feed the soul as well as sustain a deep sense of well-being from the inside out — yet another edge that distinguishes great from good. In the hands of the proper team and in concert with the right philosophy, this synthesis of vision and circumstance can support an amazing evolution. Our goal is to create a living environment which upholds the ideals of comfort, style, and longevity. Our approach is centered around the belief that buildings speak to their inhabitants in whispers rather than shouts. Listening closely, we can learn much about the value of traditional construction methods, about devoting attention to careful rehabilitation — at much greater expense than what most developers would even dream. In our experience, the result is always worth the investment; we have an opportunity to create an extraordinary environment, more home than mere house. These thirteen residences have been designed with an enormous amount of care and foresight, with the intention of creating homes the occupants will want to pass on to their loved ones. Alma is, in the end, a boutique collection of homes for those who appreciate detail and nuance, sincerity and authenticity, whispers not shouts. Welcome home.
